  • Card game designed by Steve Jackson
Munchkin is a stand-alone card game designed by Steve Jackson that "simulates" (well, sorta') a fantasy-themed RPG (oh, ok, D&D) in a simple, card-based game that's chock full o' silliness. Everyone begins the game as a 1st level Human with NO Class (heh-heh) and via cards, they acquire Races (Elf, Dwarf, etc.), Classes (Thief, Wizard, Cleric, etc.), Items, Armor, Potions and more that they use to combat hideous monsters like the 4th level Undead Horse, the 10th level Net Troll and the 14th Level Unspeakably Awful, Indescribable Horror (very nasty, indeed). The object of the game is to reach Level 10 and levels are acquired via the slaying of monsters and the selling of acquired treasure (1,000 Gold Pieces equals 1 Level). Very silly and a lot of fun!

Wondering if It's Okay for Kids?
Other reviewers have discussed the nature of the game at length, so I will focus on something else that potential buyers might want to know: Is it appropriate for kids? The answer is, like most things, it depends on what you think is "appropriate!"

I bought this game for my family, and my daughters are aged 11 and 8 right now. They *loved* this game and wanted to play it all through Christmas vacation. Some of the cards, like The Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment," sent them into giggling hysteria. There is a lot of crude humor here, and if you're not okay with that, this game is not for your kids. There are also references that only adults will get, such as the monster known as "Crabs." If this monster catches you, you will lose all your armor and any items worn beneath the waist. Yeah, adults get it, but the kids don't. It went right over their heads.

In terms of language, there is a Bad-A** Bandana and a Sneaky Bast*** Sword. But that's as bad as it gets. Again, it will be up to each buyer's own judgment whether this is appropriate or not. My children(being girls) just giggled at the cards. They would never repeat those words in public -- or at least, they better not!

I'd rate this game PG most definitely! We will probably only let the girls play it with family until they are older, since not all parents may feel the same way.

So much fun!
When I first got the game, I had a little trouble figuring out exactly how to play it. However, once you get the basic idea of how to play it, it can be overwhelmingly addictive. My co-workers and I have played it at lunch almost every day for a year. If you have trouble getting some of the concepts, go to www.sjgames.com/forums and you can find an unending amount of support. Also there are free downloads to add to the enjoyment of the game. This game is recommended for adults due to suggestive nature of some cards: Kneepads of Allure (can't remember if this was in Munchkin or Munchkin 2 as I have both) is one that comes to mind. If you don't mind explaining in creative ways the meaning of the card, there is nothing overly offensive.

Funny, but ultimately frustrating
I am a big of Chez Geek, another Steve Jackson game. I was hoping Munchkin would be just as much fun. When I reviewed the cards before playing I was excited because it seemed hilarious. Although the game can be fun, ultimately it can be difficult for players to advance in the game. Someone usually gets frustrated and that can make the game not enjoyable for anyone. Chez Geek is awesome, Munchkin is disappointing.

Geeky game
I played this for the first time with my husband, sister and a friend. My husband is a gamer and has been for years. The rest of us are not (we run in fear from gamers). The non-gamers found this to be an easy to pick up game (with my husband also acting as rulesmaster and dumbing down some of the finer points of the game for us). My husband had fun and found the inside jokes amusing. So this is an enjoyable game for everyone to play regardless of their gamer experience.

Great parody game
This is a great game. It takes a little bit to learn the rules, but it is well worth it. It is a great find.
