Great game!
I loved this game as a kid myself, and our boys are learning to play it and seem to enjoy it as well. So glad already for the extra pieces since we had misplaced a couple on Christmas Day.

One of the greatest games of all time
This is a great strategy game. The object of the game is to capture your opponent's flag by using your military. The strategy is based in where you hide your flag and how you arrange your various pieces.

A warning: If you played this when you were a kid, beware! The new version has reversed the values of all of the pieces. The most powerful piece used to be a "1"; now it is a "10". The scouts, which were a "9" are now a "1". The miners, which can defuse bombs are "2" instead of "8".

This is important if you are thinking of buying an old version of the game, because you will confuse the living daylights out of your kids, who are used to the new numbering scheme.

Bottom line is this is a great game. The downsides are that it is only for two people, and you need to put stickers on the pieces for identification. In the old days, the information was stamped on plastic (or for very old games, wood).

There are many key points to remember when playing: Protect your miners. Your opponent will probably surround the flag with bombs. Also, do not go trekking about your opponents area with your "10" without scouts or you could run into a bomb or the Spy. Also, remember where everything is and keep some miners and scouts, and among your strongest pieces near your flag. Now, enjoy!

A Classic
Stratego was easily a classic when it first came out. It is a game of intelligence and strategy, of course, and it can at times test your memory.
To take the pieces, you can simply get next to any pice and say attack. The the opponent will reveal the attacked piece. The pieces are numbered in order from 10 being the highest to 2 being the lowest. You also have a spy, which is the only piece capable of taking the 10. 2's can hop forward any number of spaces until they hit something. You also have six bombs which onlly the3's can get past. The bombs can be used to guard the flag or to be decoys. You can move your pieces by moving them one space forward, backward, and sideways.
The board is a large field with two pools which cannot be crossed. You set up your pieces in four lines on either side of the board. Your flag is the main item which is sought by the opposing side. Once they get it, they win the game.
I highly recommend this game to people of all ages, as it will become a valuable treasure in the future.

Historically Fun!
This game is a blast for two people! Have fun trying to stratagize your own plans to beat your opponent! Easy to
learn, yet challenging to play... but not too hard! I don't know about 8 year old's though. Overall, Fun Game!!

Better-Constructed Version Is Available
I nearly bought this until I read that it involves cardboard and stickers. That's shameful.

Search Amazon's partners and other major booksellers for the "Nostalgia" edition of Stratego. It runs $4 or $5 more. It has plastic pieces with metallic paint.

This game is a blast; you and your kids are going to play it a lot.
