User Submitted Othello Reviews (cont...)Date: 2007-01-02 It will exercise her 9 yr old brain more than a Barbie ever could I was happy to give my 9 year old cousin a game to exercise her brain rather than a Barbie or a video game. She learned the rules in the first 5 minutes of the first game, with just a few snags (had trouble understanding that the discs must be placed contigously. also occasional trouble understanding that discs cannot be flipped if they are surrounded by an opponent's disc by an indirect move). But the point is, she was able to play right away, and will eventually gain skills at strategy. her dad is teaching her to play chess now, which is all about strategy but is harder. Othello is a good game to be playing at the same age while learning chess, because it's easier but exercises the same parts of the brain for strategy and thinking ahead. Date: 2006-12-27 Combines best features of chess and checkers Checkers and chess are the most common strategy games without any luck. Checkers is good because it's simple to learn. However, as you grow older checkers becomes too simple. Chess is good because it's strategy takes a lifetime to master. However, chess takes time to learn and there are many trick moves in the game. Othello is easy to learn like checkers. However, is strategy is on par with chess requiring "a lifetime to master." Date: 2006-10-25 Mind explanding games for kids The simpliest games can be the hardest. Easy learn. Hard to master. A simple game of attempting to capture board space by surrounding your opponent. Surround your opponent and every piece in line turns over to your color. The player with the most board in their color wins. Sound easy? Not by a long shot. A wonderful game to help teach children strategic thinking and the ability to view several moves in advance Date: 2006-06-24 Expand Your Mind and Your Child's--While Walking Down Memory Lane! I loved this game with a passion as a child, and have many vivid memories of sitting with my father playing it with him. My father, like so many of his generation, was a busy working man who didn't stop very often for such "trivialities" (but did enjoy games of skill), I think it's a huge testament to how this game bridges age gaps in its universal appeal. Now, all these years later (30 to be exact) I rediscovered the game with my own children. It's challenging, fun, and doesn't get tiresome precisely because it IS great entertainment for all ages. My husband even uses it as a mentor at the local school, and has found it a great conversation opener in the course of the mentor program. I have one small beef--it should come with a ready supply of extra game pieces. As far as I can tell our game didn't come with any extras. Of course, that could just be that we lost those too. :) If you enjoy games at all, you'll definitely love this one--and your kids will be crazy about it! Date: 2006-03-17 Great mind expander This is a good quality Othello set. We haven't played in a while. Othello is a great thinking game, easier than chess, but there is much more to it than most other board games.
