Best Set Ever - Will blow you away for years
The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX speakers might be the single greatest electronic investment of my life. I bought these babies in THE 7TH GRADE after saving and researching for months. Im 22 now...10 years seems so long.

Since that fateful day, Ive put it through a heavy metal phase, endless counterstrike sessions, years of use as a primary stereo system at parties blaring rock and rap, and four years of college (and a bit gentler music, sometimes).

Ive packed up and moved more times than I can count: to and from dorms every year, home for summers, different apartments during different jobs...they have been thrown in suitcases, shipped across country, sat in cold garages and storage units for months on end.

Every time I move, I expect them to have seen their last days. Then I pull them out, set them up, and let them rip...they still bring tears. They are the one constant in my life.

Part of me thinks that no accessory should last this long, but everytime I think to myself that its time to get a newer, bigger stereo, I turn these babies on, with their "outdated" analog connections, and those thoughts are instantly put to rest.

These speakers are a part of me. They will be at my wedding fist-pumping to Taylor Swift. They will watch my children's first steps with unabashed joy. The will be a pillar of strength for my wife, blasting Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata as the box closes at my funeral.

I dont believe in an afterlife. The 2.1s will be my legacy. While I fade into inexistence, all I know is that they will remain in this world. Facing the future unflinchingly, without remorse or self-pity. Eternal.

Standing proudly on my rotting desk.

better than bose by far...
I owned the bose companion 3 speakers for a while and ended up selling them because they just didn't do it for me. Months later I picked up these bad boys and I am impressed! They cost less and sound amazing! I do wish there were an easier to get to power button, but that's not a deal breaker. I think I will be sticking with these for a long time!

Connection problems, potential heat problem
I got these speakers back in 2000. They sounded great and I really liked them. As many others have said, good clarity and nice bass. The phones jack was a nice addition for late night gaming.

My quibbles are two.
First, the mini-jack that plugs into the back of each satellite was sensitive to placement. If the jack wasn't in the right orientation, the sound would be lost. Simple fix: fiddle with it until the sound comes back.
Second, heat. I had noticed the amp was always warm (added bonus: heated foot rest), but never really thought about it much.
Now, in 2010, the system died (blew a fuse, replaced it and now I can only get a thumping from the sub that can't be attenuated by the volume control). I opened it up and found lots of crusty capacitors and discolored epoxy, both signs of heat. And though I never measured the temperature, it seems much warmer now--too hot to hold for 10 seconds. Some searching has suggested others have similar heat-related problems.

Maybe ten years is a good run for speakers. Probably their construction details have changed (hopefully for the better, but it seems that rarely is the case in this world).

They sound so good though, I'll probably buy another set.

Unbeatable value
I'm not much for writing reviews, so I'll keep this one brief: these speakers are AWESOME! They will easily fill an entire room, apartment, or even small house with clean, powerful goodness. I've had mine over 6 years, in four different locations- I think they are worth at least double the price. Buy them, they will not disappoint you.

Sounds natural and warm, with some power
If you want great sound from your computer, don't hesitate and buy this unit now. I say this because I'm very familiar with good sounding stereos. In my past life, I used to fix them. The best speakers I've ever heard in my life are the Bang and Olufsen Penta tower speakers. They are as close to aural heaven as you can get. And like this system, you should buy it if you can. But, if you buy the Penta used, make sure you take it to a repair shop and have the pots in the amps replaced.

Now to this system. It is not a tower B&O. But, it is the best computer speaker system I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of them. The speakers sound very natural and the base is not boomy like a Logitech, but a rolling smooth base. It really does go down to about 30Hz. Loose fixtures in your room will rattle. This, while the sound emitting from the satellites sound quite natural. You don't feel like the speakers are going to overpower you. Your ears don't get tired while listening to them. They sound natural at both low and high volumes. I'm really impressed with this unit. No unit is perfect, but for a hundred and fifty dollars, this is as close as you can get. Below are some things you might watch out for if you're really picky about them:

1) The highs are very good. But they are not the sizzling high you get from a Bose system. But the Bose has no mid-range, and your ears get tired from being zapped by the highs all the time. The highs in this unit is high enough without irritating your ears.

2) The DIN connector to the amp/sub-woofer is small and can be damaged if tugged at too hard. This is noted extensively elsewhere.

3) I wish they had used wooden enclosures for the satellites instead of plastic. The sound would be even more natural. There are no air holes in the satellites, so the enclosure will vibrate resonantly. But, a plastic resonance is not as nice as a wooden resonance. I guess this is too much to ask for at this price range.

4) The angle of the satellites point a little high so that the sound is not directional to your ears when you sit at a desk. (I actually prefer this)

5) I've actually listened to a few of these units. Be careful of two things. If you buy it used, the cones can be loose and the sound not as vibrant. You can test this by gently pushing on the cones. If they feel really loose from 0-.5", you've got a used one. The sound may be more muddled than a new one. On the other hand, I've tested a new one where the sound seems a little too pushy. It seems to be trying hard to attack you with its sound. Some might like that. But, as many audiophiles might tell you, speakers need a slight break-in period anyway. They will loosen up and become more compliant and sound a little more natural as time goes along.

In summary, this is a nice unit. Do your ears a favor and buy it if you can. In the hundred to a hundred and fifty dollar range, you can't go wrong.
