Fine puzzle but noisy
My husband bought this for our son when he was about 14 months. He likes to pick up the pieces by the little knobs and bang them around. As he has gotten a little older (now 16 months) he understands a bit better about trying to fit the pieces into the puzzle. He seems to get a kick out of the sounds - especially the firetruck and ambulance (perhaps because those are the more distintive sounds).

That said, the puzzle is VERY sensitive and will make the sounds very easily- as the piece is over the spot, not necessarily in the slot. If one sound is playing and another piece is inserted it continues to play the one active sound and not the subsequent one. The creepy factor many people have alluded to is that fact that if the pieces are not all in place it will make sounds even if you walk by it (or a cat walks by or even a big truck drives by outside!) I have not heard it make noise when the puzzle is completed, but my husband said he did!

So, for kids that like noisy toys and puzzles, this is a fun one. Even knowing the creepy sound factor, I ordered the farm animal one too since my son does enjoy this toy. That said, we now store it in a basement, far away from where my son sleeps!!

BEWARE- Sounds don't work!
I really wanted to like this toy. My 20 month old daughter is enthralled with vehicles right now, but HALF of the SOUNDS DON"T WORK. Or work only some of the time. We have other sound puzzles, by Melissa and Doug, that don't have this problem. Additionally, these sounds are brassy unlike our other puzzles. I wouldn't be able to recognize a particular vehicle's sound without looking at the pictures. Too bad because it is a great idea. I would definitely pass on this toy.

Not the usual high quality Melissa and Doug creation.
These puzzles can be very annoying and SPOOKY! The puzzles are overly "sensitive" and slight movement will and can trigger the puzzles off. Our cat likes to hang around the play room and in the middle of the night, these puzzles sound off on their own!!! We actually had to warn our house/pet-sitter just so she won't be calling ghost busters!. Poor design and construction - the pieces does not even have to match, will just randomly goes off! We bought both the vehicle and animal puzzle and hence the example given here. My 18 month old "bang" (didn't even need to be in place) the roaster piece onto the cow spot and next it's "moo moo moo". Zero star for educational value for these series of puzzles!
The pieces are also small and thin, unlike the typical high quality thick chunky solid wood pieces Melissa & Doug is famous for.

Noises everywhere!
It's a good learning puzzle that we first encountered at the barber shop so we bought one for our 2 year old son. It works good and the noises are a bit annoying (no worse than some other toys we have). Although lately it's been making ship noises whenever we walk by it. That's a little annoying! Especially at night when the cat walks by it! Other than that, good puzzle.

Not for Sensitive Kids!
My little boy is now 2 and he still freaks out if he hears the sounds this puzzle makes. He cries and runs out of the room. It also has a tendency to go off at sunset or whenever the light level in the room changes. We took the batteries out for a while, and he was fine with it. Not long ago I put them back in, thinking maybe he'd be okay with the sounds now, but no, he gets just as upset as before.

This is probably better for an older child (3+) who can understand that it's nothing to be afraid of.
