Embarrasing and Dangerous
I have never been so moved to write an Amazon review before, but feel it necessary this time. This was the WORST gift we have ever purchased.

We ordered this for our 3 year old nephew for Christmas. When we removed it from the shipping box, the mailbox was wrapped in cellophane and the product looked in good shape.

We wrapped the gift and gave it to our nephew. He was immediately excited to play with it. We removed the outer cellophane wrapping and immediately (before we could even hand it to him), the entire thing collapsed into a dozen or more pieces. We had to quickly collect all of the pieces and take it away from a very upset little boy who didn't understand what was going on.

Not only was this unbelievably embarrasing in front of friends and family and upsetting to our nephew, but there were several small and sharp pieces that could have been extremely dangerous had he gotten a hold of them.

This product is poorly constructed with wooden dowels and glue (though obviously not enough). All that holds it together is the wrapping. I have not had any other experience with a Melissa and Doug product but I can assure you this will be the last time we even consider one.

You'll need some carpender's glue!
This is a very cute product and a great set but it does not hold up! I didn't want to believe the reviews that said it was not durable because I'm a big fan of Melissa and Doug products but it's true, it is definetly not put together very well. Granted, I bought it at a discount store, TJ Maxx, and had them take an extra amount off when I noticed, what I thought to be, a minor imperfection. There was some paint that had chipped in one of the cracks. So no big deal. I gave the mailbox to a friend of mine's son and he was very excited to rip into it. But when we opened it up it was already starting to fall apart. It must have been dropped. Within 15 min. the whole thing had collapsed and I was, of course, extremely embarrassed! Good thing the kid's dad is a carpender! He's going to send me a bill. I'm sure that with a little strong glue this mailbox will be just fine and I know that he will enjoy many hours playing with it. Just be careful! I wouldn't give this as a gift to anyone without opening it up and giving it a little glue. I actually bought another one for my daughter who, after seeing her friend's wanted one of her own. I'm just prepared to have to do a little fixing. I think it's worth it.

Great toy but a little fragile.
My kids love, love, love this. We saw it first in a library and they played with it nonstop for about half an hour. But the lock had fallen off and the one we have looks like it may not last long with rough toddler play. Still, the lock isn't really integral to the way they play with it and probably could be glued back on easily.

5yr old has played with it for a few yrs now.
I got this toy at a garage sale for $5 It was brand new (man at sale said a family member owns a toy store and gives him scratch and dent items for his sales) This item had been dropped and had a small dent in the top of the side. When I got home I colored it in with a marker of the same color. It wasnt a perfect match but my son was 3 at the time. He loved his mailbox. I got it at a time when pretend play was a big part of his life. He would carry the mail in a bag and put them into the mailbox. Then make another trip and use his key to take them out again and and place back in his bag. He would deliver them to different rooms in the house. The mail will only fit into certain slots and only turned a certain way. My son is 5 yrs old now and still plays with it. Not in the same way but he does still use it. I was gonna give it away but he asked that we keep it. We have a real plastic mailbox attached to his wooden swing/playset outside and he uses these letters and stamps in it now. Would have been worth the retail cost too.
