User Submitted Uncle Milton Ant Farm Gel Colony Reviews (cont...)Date: 2008-07-09 RIP OFF! Must PURCHASE parts to use! Obtaining parts next to impossible. I sent "UNCLE MILTON" this letter (below) and got a lame response of, "Thanks for your thoughts" Dear Uncle Milton, I am writing to express my (and my son's) tremendous disappointment in your ant farm gel colony. We also feel that the way you sell this borders on dishonest and I can not imagine ANYONE who is happy to discover that a kit they purchase can not be used until more money is spent and 6 or more weeks pass for the "parts" necessary to use it. Have you ever received a note saying, "My son was so excited to open this kit and find out he can't use it! What a great idea!" Or maybe you've heard, "We LOVE the empty ant farm. It was fun to send even more money than the purchase price to hope we can ever use it. The bonus surprise of waiting longer than the 6 weeks to call and find out that "acceptable weather" has nothing to do with the weather; but rather that it has to do with the temperature needing to be one that our state never gets to...well that just made the experience even more special. Although the ants can never be delivered to the region in which we live, we have thoroughly enjoyed wondering what it might have been like. Thanks for letting us purchase the box! We'll put this on our list of great ideas to give to friends in the future!" We ordered the ants 2 months ago...I called to find out the status and was told "The ants can't be shipped because it's over 85 degrees and that would kill them." In disgusted disbelief I informed the representative that we live in southern Texas and it is rarely below 85 degrees EVER! It will be at least another 4 or 5 months before that is even a remote possibility. She said, "Well the kit does explain that the ants can only be shipped `weather permitting'." Well...where I come from..."weather permitting" would allow me to believe that on a sunshiny day when kids are out running around playing, the weather is looking pretty good. Hurricanes, tsunamis, ice storms...I get that putting a little glitch in the delivery system. But you should not be selling a kit in a region that can almost NEVER reach the "weather permitting" status! You should say "Temperature permitting" AND you should indicate what that temperature is AND you should have stated on the OUTSIDE of the sealed box, "This kit requires further fees and a minimum 6 week waiting period to obtain the ants necessary to use it. Delivery of ants will only be possible in temperatures under 85 degrees." I definitely feel duped. You've got my money and I've got a kit my son won't be able to use until long after he has lost interest in it. Thanks for the rotten birthday gift. I'll permanently mark your company on the "rip off" list for future reference. Maybe your company should be called "Uncle Milkem" as in "Milk `em for all you can! Suckers!!!" Date: 2008-05-03 Run away! Get the sand version. This was a huge waste of money. The ants took forever to ship, as many other reviewers have pointed out, but my real complaint is that they never really dug in. They arrived alive, but never did any tunneling. Eventually, they died ... probably of boredom. I just finally threw it away today. Get the sand version ant farm. We've had those in the past and they're fun (although you're still going to have to wait eons for the ants to arrive). Date: 2008-04-19 Despite other reviews, it worked well for me. As I often do before buying a new product online, I read the reviews here on Amazon. And I did before purchasing this ant farm. All the negative reviews had me a little worried, but I thought it was cool enough to risk the purchase. And I'm actually glad I did. I agree with the reviewers that Uncle Milton isn't the best at shipping quality ants in a timely manner, but the kit itself is top notch. I ended up ordering ants from [...] and they shipped them in great condition, well packaged, and it was still basically winter. I was very pleased with this supplier. I was also very pleased with the toy store ([...]) where I bought the ant farm. If you buy this kit, keep an open mind and realize that you might be better off getting your ants from someone other than Uncle Milton. I'm basing my high marks in this review not on the process of getting live ants from Uncle Milton, but on the kit itself. Have a little patience and you'll be rewarded with a great educational toy that will give your youngsters many months of observing these fascinating creatures. Date: 2008-03-20 Shortlived It also took us about 8 weeks to receive our ants. When we received them, they were all alive except for one or two. I didn't count them, so I don't know exactly how many there were alive. We followed the directions precisely and the ants started to dig tunnels, but then they all died within three days. What a disappointment after waiting so long to get them. I'm going to try to return the item, but I'm concerned it's been too long since the purchase date. After reading others' reviews I'm not going to try to deal with the company. Great idea for a product, but not what it advertises to be. Date: 2007-12-25 Horrible, moldy mess! What a terrible, cruel ant farm. The gel farm arrived fine, but from day one smelled of curdled milk. I ordered ants from a competitor after some research and knowing they'll probably arrive dead months later if I used the form which came with this farm. All ants arrived alive and active, about a week after I placed the order online. Put them in, and by second day mildew formed on all walls, gel on top and sides turned into puddles of disgusting soup and gel separated from walls and started to mildew - it stunk inside! Ants never dug tunnels, just remained on top of the disgusting, runny gel. What a nightmare. Had to throw out, very sad for the ants. Please, do not buy this product, no matter how discounted it is.
