Having finally retired the venerable old family Scrabble board (purchased circa 1953), we upgraded to this Deluxe Edition, which, alas, is not quite as deluxe as deluxe is. The "old" deluxe edition was built to withstand the Charge of the Light Brigade. A heavy board was outfitted with an elevated grid to hold the letters securely in place. The old turntable was strong enough for your kid sister to sit on. This "new" deluxe edition still has a raised grid, though it's measured in millimeters not fractions of inches. This may in fact be an improvement as the letters used to get jammed in the grid anyway. The new-style turntable is made of a more brittle plastic with cheapo rubber feet which I assume will get lost fairly quickly. The letter frequency chart stickers are printed in dark gold, and the print gets lost against the maroon plastic of the letter racks. Despite the "everything was made better in the old days" lamentations, this is a handsome game that comes with everything you need to play Scrabble except for the Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary (available through Amazon.com) and an Official Scrabble pencil for keeping score. It's an odd oversight, since Official Scrabble Scoring Sheets ARE included. The letters are of heavy plastic, the racks hold the letters securely, the letter storage bag has a drawstring closure, and everything fits neatly into a storage bin built into the turntable. The ability to spin the board, Lazy Susan style, to accommodate each player's turn, is surprisingly effective in raising the enjoyment quotient of this Scrabble game by a factor of ten. Overall, nicely done! Date: 2008-06-06 Great family fun! I love Scrabble, and now have my kids playing it with me! This is very durable, the pieces, the board itself, everything. (Although the letters will not hold up to an 80 pound dog chewing on them. sigh). Great family fun, much easier having the pieces "locked" in place on the board, instead of sliding all around. Date: 2008-05-14 Deluxe Turntable Scrabble The Turntable Scrabble is very durable, conveniently stores the games pieces, and is much more convenient to use than the flat board version. Scrabble is a great way to improve conversation and interaction with our adult son and his girlfriend. Much, much better than watching TV, which discourages conversation and interaction. Date: 2008-04-18 Not the board I grew up with Growing up, we played Scrabble around the kitchen table on our deluxe Scrabble board made of heavy duty blue plastic and raised gridlines. Today, when at home we still play Scrabble on that same board. This Board I am reviewing is not near the same class. While the board has some neat features: Tiered lazy susan (so the Board can be table level or lifted around 3 inches while still rotating), nice wood tiles with cloth carry bag, sand timer, 4 tile holders, and 1 scorepad, it falls flat is in the actual surface. The visible face is inserted in the board frame like a picture and it is not much thicker (translation-Flimsy). There are raised gridlines running around each square (and this is where my bias comes in) to lock the tiles in. The height of these gridlines is minimal at best so the tiles (with a slight jostle) won't stay where you put them. the thin laminated face board seems to be untreated on the back which makes me suspect that with a little water spill warping will occur. This review was tough for me because the quality of the board from my past is so much better that it feels sturdier 30+ years later than a brand new board today. Overall, This is a good deal for the price ($[...]), but somehow I don't think it should be labeled "Deluxe". Date: 2008-04-08 Deluxe Scrabble Board We have used one of these boards for years and it was time for the new updated version. This is a great item with which to use your brain playing and I highly recommend it.
