User Submitted LEGO Mindstorms NXT Reviews (cont...)Date: 2007-12-29 NXT - Great but why such a small memory? I won't repeat what everyone has said about the functionality about this toy but what I AM happy to repeat is the fact that the memory is WAY too small. Just as you start to get enthusiastic about this product you hit the dreaded memory full problem. This is really disappointing because a) it limits children's ability to explore the world of robotics and b) because memory is SO CHEAP that to give the customer less than you get in some musical greetings cards is rediculous. If Lego thought it might add to the cost then why-oh-why didn't they simply put a memory expansion slot on the NXT brick? Then we could put some serious memory in it. It's also naive to think that this is just a toy. Lots of educational establishments (including universities) are buying this thing because it has such potential. Come on Lego - give us a memory expansion option!!! Date: 2007-12-28 Great Learning Experience I bought this to use with my 9 year old grandsons. We are having a great time. I was amazed how quickly they started programming--within the first hour. Immediate feedback on their programs really keeps their attention. I did purchase a separate book on programming which was helpful. Date: 2007-12-28 Great For The Right Kid/Parent If your child has an interest in robotics, this is the right way to get started. There are numerous kits for building individual models but combining Legos (something all kids are familiar with), and sensors/motors/software makes this a real winner. This has really sparked my eight year old son's imagination. The kit is intuitive but just advanced enough that you can plan on working closely with your child - sort of a dying practice in our culture. It will take some learning on your part in order to keep this interesting and reinforcing. Plan on developing a healthy respect for people that design complex robotic systems. Date: 2007-12-19 Probably more fun for the adults than the kids... This is a very interesting and educational toy. It has lead to many discussions and further reading by the young teen who received it. The diagrams for the "quick start" robot are not as clear as they could be, but I was able to prevail in about an hour - the 13-year-old recipient was not. Once together, it was easy to build further robots as this "quick start" was a very useful starting module. Overall, it is fun, educational, and a good starting point to reinforce an existing interest in the field. I have found that the adults in the house were ultimately more entertained and intrigued than the younger folks. I give it five stars because it was engaging, educational, and inspired an interest in engineering. Too bad such gifts for the 12-16-year-old set are so few and far between. Date: 2007-11-28 LEGO mindstorms is outstanding FUN, EDUCATIONAL, and FLEXIBLE !! If you can imagine it, you can build it.
