It's really neat to see what they're up to all the time, and follow up on their progress with the tunneling. This provides a maintenance-free ongoing science lesson! Ants are not included, but you can order them online - very inexpensive. They do, however, take a while to arrive, so you might want to order them at the same time you order the farm. You want harvester ants from Ants Alive... Anyway, great product, very easy to set up and use, and very cool with the lights and everything. Fascinating to watch. Date: 2007-01-12 Fantastic!!! Not wanting to fill my sons' christmas with just toys I bought him this ant farm and hoped he'd like it. Well, not only does HE love it, but the whole family gather round it daily to check out the ants progress. For 2 days after we put the ants in there was not much going on, but on day 3 they started tunneling and now there is an entire network of cleverly made tunnels, and you can watch them making the tunnels. The light feature is brilliant for close examination of the ants but we've found that the ants prefer to work with the light off - so I wouldn't recommend keeping the light on all day. The harvester ants that we ordered have really big jaws and they chew away the gel and then take it away to be deposited above ground. It's the most fascinating thing, watching them create an environment for themselves. I HIGHLY recommend this ant farm to anyone whose child (or parents!) is interested in bugs of any sort. These ants are truly remarkable! Date: 2007-01-11 Thrilled With This Product! I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my daughter. Unfortunately, the ants didn't arrive until a week after Christmas, but it was ok. We were all so amazed at how quickly the ants started making tunnels! It took them only a few hours to make a tunnel and watching them work was so fascinating. Now, they have made several tunnels that connect to each other and are still working on constructing another one. This product is great, not only for kids, but for adults, as well. I find myself looking at it several times a day just to see what the ants have done. The blue light that illuminates it make it all the more interesting. Very educational item that is bound to be a hit with both young and old alike. I may have to order several more myself. Date: 2007-01-09 Facincating for hours at a time This really is a great little product. My 5 yr old and I love to watch the ants and then see how far their tunnels have progressed each day. The LED lights on the bottom really light the unit up at night and make a great night lite. For those worried about the ants getting out - the lid is pretty tight and only comes off if you REALLY want it off. Make sure your child knows that these ants will bite so they won't want to take the lid off without your help. The first batch of ants that were shipped lived only for about 2 weeks (only 1 left) but they made some great tunnels. Overall this is an excellent product and I would recommend it to anyone. Date: 2007-01-09 Love it My kids and I have been totally fascinated by the ANTW2 Antworks Illuminated. It is such a great improvement over the ant farms of years past. The light enables us to watch it at night. Friends of all ages have been attracted to this ant farm. We've enjoyed ours so much we gave several as Christmas gifts to others.
