I loved it because the lid sealed on tight - so even if it dropped it didn't open. Also, you don't have to open the lid at all to feed the ants. Although, my husband would have preferred to be able to feed them. It's very easy to see the ants and fun to watch them build their tunnels. Although, after a few weeks they built all that they wanted too and seem to be rather bored in there. So, it became rather dull. But, it was fun to watch them build while they did. The ants lived about 2-3 months. Date: 2007-10-15 Not what I expected. I purchased this ant farm to teach my children about the ant colonies and let them watch them build. The problem is that it is very difficult to catch the ants, then once you do..you try to put them inside the container without the other ants escaping. Some ants died in the process of opening and shutting the container top on them. The ones that did survive never built anything in the gel (I did put the holes in the gel, the ants just never went into them) Somehow the ants were able to escape. In my process of catching the ants dirt was also in the mix, so now my gel ant farm is a dirty gel ant farm. (I know you can wash it, etc) It is just too much of a hassle. After getting frustrated and reading the book...to find out what was going wrong.....I realized the gel ant farm makers recommend their ants....so I guess that is really what I should have done....purchased their ants along with their gel ant farm. We were all disappointed that we didnt have a thriving ant farm. I think the best solution is the old fashioned dirt ant farm for us....or order our the ants... Date: 2007-10-05 Antworks Birthday Gift Ordered this for my son who just turned 6. The farm was easy to set up and worked as described. Ordered ants from AntsAlive. Ants arrived in about a week. All 25 are alive and doing well. They started tunneling the first day and haven't stopped. My son is so excited about his Antworks he took it to school today to show the rest of his class. The ones we bougth thru the mail. arent doing much and most of them came dead. The large wild ants were more active and fun to watch. The ant case is great.
