should come with label "lesson in misery"
This was a sad experience for my 11 year old. The ants are shipped from the West, New Mexico I think, and were in bad shape when the arrived. We has some live for a few days. They were too sick to do anything though. I thought this was a really cool product and would be best for someone living in the west or midwest, near the ant source.

Awesome and Educational
Just make sure to order your ants at the same time you order the ant farm. I got anxious and excited when I received my ant farm, but didn't have any ants to put in just yet. It is an awesome experience when you get them all together.

so far its not up to expectations
my daughter and i spent some time collecting ants (a dustpan and small sweeper does the trick with my daughter holding the jar and working the lid). We got about 15 ants in there and most died after a bit...we've got to replenish. Problem is... the ants found a gap between the gel and the side and worked their way down there, tunneling only along the side to the bottom and then a bit along the bottom, rather than tunneling through the center of the medium. I would recommend boring a couple more significant starter holes than the instructions suggest and make sure all the ants you collect are of the same type or it is more like gladiatorial combat than ant farming.

Really Cool Ant Farm
We bought this farm for my seven year old, but my whole family has been fascinated watching the ants tunnel through the space age gel. They were especially cool in the first week or so when they were working like crazy to establish their tunnels. We don't really use the illuminated portion of the farm much, but the farm itself is fascinating. This is a great gift for kids.

Durable but only mildly entertaining
I would say this product is durable as it was dropped from 6 feet high and though the top popped off and the ants that escaped had to be exterminated, the farm itself remained usable for another round of ants. It was really fun in the beginning to watch the new tunnels, but now the ants are either getting old and slow or lazy as the work is done so they just sit around. For educational purposes I think it is a great product and we have enjoyed it, just kind of dull now.
