Fun and Educational Gift
I bought this as a cubicle present for a friend of mine. It gets rave reviews at work and is a wonderful distraction when you need it. I could watch the ants for hours.

We may never know how the ant farm works!
If you are considering ordering this or any ant farm, BEWARE!

Like other reviewers, I don't have any remarks to make - positive or negative - about the ant farm, itself. You see, you really can't evaluate it WITHOUT ANTS!!! We gave my six year old son this ant farm for Christmas and placed an online order with Life Studies (the information was included in the box) on January 1, 2007. We did receive a tube of ants on January 17, 2007 which was a Tuesday after the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Also, it was an exceptionally cold week, previously. It was not surprising to find that our ants had not survived the trip from Utah to Arizona.

However, since Life Studies packaged their ants with a warning that this could happen along with promises that the ants would be replaced, I emailed them that same day. As of February 9, we still had not received any new ants nor had we heard from Life Studies. I've tried to call them several times during their office hours but have never reached anything other than their answering machine. Today is March 7, 2007 and we are still ant-less. I left a message on their machine today but, frankly, I have little hope. Even more frustrating, they seem to be the only game in town. I haven't been able to find anyone else who will supply Harvester ants for ant farms unless I can produce a USDA license.

The ant farm is probably great fun but unless we can find a way to capture our own ants, we may never know.

Great tank but where are the *&#^ ants?
I suspect I would really like this item if I could only get Life Studies to send ants that still have a pulse (Do ants have pulses? I don't know. Why? Because I've no ants to observe). The first batch of ants arrived a month and a half after my check was cashed with every ant dead in the tube, the second batch hasn't arrived and numerous emails to Life Studies have gone unanswered. I've now owned this thing for four months and it's been empty the entire time. Normally, I wouldn't crab on about a consumables supply issue (it's a bit like filling a review of an automobile with complaints about motor oil) but a) the manufacturers of this item instruct you to buy ants from Life Studies and b) an ant farm without ants is not an ant farm, nor even a farm, it's a rather pricey blue night-light.

This is the nicest ant farm I've ever seen, the curve of the plastic reminds one of a deep sea aquarium exhibit. As mentioned, it's filled with a blue goo that the ants might tunnel through (not that I'd know, sans ants). The lights (four white LEDs) are in the base and cast a nice glow upwards through the gel medium; overall, it looks really neat in a darkened room, a bit like a swimming pool at night.

Be advised there's a smallish (about 2"x 1.5" x 1.5") wall-wart power supply on the end of the power cord, in case you plan to put this somewhere where you can't easily get to the outlet. There's no power switch to turn off the light, you have to unplug the power cord and as it winds through the base of the unit, it's easier to pull out at the wall end. The tank's clear plastic front scratches very easily but fortunately, the scratches buff out relatively well using toothpaste and are not generally visible when the unit's lights are on. My unit arrived 3/4s filled with goo--not full nearly to the top as shown on the product photos. That might be due to the lack of ant activity displacement, but in any case, that empty area tends to collect quite a bit of unsightly condensation.

I'll update this review if the ants ever arrive or when six months go by, whichever comes first.

WE LOVE IT!
I am 55 and all my life have wanted an ant farm so I bought this one. As it turns out my husband and two boys, ages 24 and 17, also love watching it! We ordered the ants from [...] and they came in about a week. It's during the freezing temps and I was worried the ants would die and when I got them they all appeared dead! But I was hoping they were just hybernating and dumped them all in the habitat anyhow and with 10 minutes all but 5 of the 35 ants were up and active! Since they weren't moving, they were easy to dump into the habitat. I read the reviews about the biting and stinging ants so I was very cautious. I have read you can reuse it with more ants once these die, but I am hoping I can also cleanout the gel and buy more and keep using it, since it isn't an inexpensive product. But it is very enjoyable and amazing to watch!

life works is not reputable for ordering ants
I ordered my ants from life works, as stipulated on the box the ant farm, and when they arrived, 6 out of 25 were alive. I called them back, emailed them, and faxed them, and never got a response. However, another shipment of ants came, and this time they were ALL dead. To top it off, Life Works has charged my credit card twice for the ants, and I can't get anybody on the phone or by email to give me a response or to correct it. DO NOT DEAL WITH LIFE WORKS!!! I have reported them to the better business bureau, and I'm refusing the charges that they billed without my consent.
BTW, the ant farm itself is really neat...
